The 25 year old attacking midfield has played a limited role in Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea side this term, starting 11 of 20 Premier League fixtures, and his angry reaction to being subbed at Southampton could perhaps be the last straw for the Blues boss who appears to favour Eden Hazard and Oscar over the former Valencia man.
PSG and Juventus have both been linked with interest in Mata but the chance to return to La Liga may tempt the Spanish international though one would wonder quite where the Chelsea man would fit into Barcelona’s first team.
With the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Neymar, Cristian Tello, Pedro, Cesc Fabregas and Andres Iniesta supporting Lionel Messi in the final third there is a chance that a move to the Catalan giants would result in an even more limited chance of first team action.
Mata won Chelsea’s Player of the Year awards in both his first two seasons at Chelsea, helping the club to win Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup triumphs but his form has certainly suffered this season, perhaps as a result of a sense of uncertainty under Mourinho.
