The 25 year old was already playing a limited role in the Blues first team set-up when he exacerbated matters by reacting angrily to being subbed in a recent fixture against Southampton, this flare up was perhaps worsened further by the fact that the man who replaced Mata, Oscar, went on to score and provide two assists in a superb 30 minutes cameo.

Mata is now firmly behind Oscar and Eden Hazard in terms of Chelsea’s creative midfielder pecking order and having started just 11 of Chelsea’s 20 Premier League fixtures, in marked contrast to his pivotal role in each of his two previous seasons at Stamford Bridge.

Man United have previously made formal their interest in Mata earlier this season but may well be ready to make a fresh move though this source believes Chelsea are unlikely to sell to domestic rivals and as such interest from PSG and Atletico Madrid could well be forthcoming.

David Moyes is keen to bring in further central midfield options and has also been linked with Premier League stars Adam Lallana and Newcastle United’s Yohan Cabaye.

Man United’s midfield could certainly do with freshening up as summer addition Marouane Fellaini struggled for form before he was sidelined with injury concerns. Tom Cleverley and Anderson have failed to make a consistent impact and Darren Fletcher is only just feeling his way back into first team action after a lengthy spell out with illness.
