Serie A outfit Udinese want to sign out-of-favour Liverpool front man Fabio Borini to replace veteran striker Antonio Di Natale at the Stadio Friuli next season, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The Italy international was Reds head coach Brendan Rodgers’s first-ever signing after taking over from previous manager Kenny Dalglish in the Anfield hot seat in the summer of 2012, with the Northern Irishman splashing out £10.5m in order to land Borini from Serie A giants AS Roma on a five-year deal.

However, it is fair to say that in the intervening 18 months on Merseyside, the striker has found it desperately hard to win a regular starting place up front for the Reds, with both a plethora of untimely and lengthy injury layoffs and a loss of confidence in front of goal contributing to Rodgers’s decision to loan the 22-year-old out to Sunderland for this campaign on transfer deadline day last September.

But with just three goals and one assist to his name in total in all competitions for the struggling Black Cats, Borini’s luck in front of goal has not changed and now with Udinese offering both the player and Liverpool an escape route, the Italian looks like having played his final game for the club.
