Hammers boss Sam Allardyce sees the 31 year old Ghana international as a potential replacement for West Ham star Mohamed Diame, who may well be set to leave the relegation threatened East London club.
Experienced Blues star Essien has struggled to force his way into the Blues side under Jose Mourinho, who clearly values the battler having brought the player to Real Madrid on loan last season, making just two Premier League starts this season.
Essien is out of contract in the summer and as such will be considering his option and perhaps the chance to make the short move to West Ham will appeal to the tough tackler, who still has the ability to make an impact in the English top tier.
In the early stages of his Chelsea career Essien was considered one of the best in his position in European football but has struggled to retain consistency in recent seasons and seems destined to leave Stamford Bridge sooner or later.
