Rodgers is known to be in the market for some fresh faces to add to his ailing midfield that has been struck with numerous injuries over recent weeks and CaughtOffside understands that he is currently putting together a package worth around £9m for the PSV attacker.

Wijnaldum was tipped to leave the Eredivise giants over the summer but the club managed to keep hold of him by handing him the captain’s armband following the departure of Kevin Strootman to Roma and the retirement of Mark Van Bommel, but Liverpool are keen to test his resolve by seeing how true his desire to stay really is.

He has, however, had a limited impact on the side this season due to a back injury sustained in September, but he is now believed to be close to a return to full fitness just in time for the new year.

Rodgers had sent his scouting team to all corners of Europe in the hunt for new and exciting talent, and at 23-years-old the PSV playmaker has ticked all of the right boxes so far.

Having joined the club from rivals Feyenoord in 2011 he has gone on to score an impressive 39 in 105 appearances, notching up 18 assists in the process, and he is capable of playing anywhere across the board just behind the strikers, though he is at his best in the middle.

He has finally started to make his way into the Dutch national side too, clocking up three caps so far and even managing to get himself on the scoresheet during a game against San Marino. If he is able to recover in time to enjoy a good second half of the season then he could very well be on the plane to Brazil for the World Cup this summer.

PSV are said to be reluctant to let him go, but will not stand in his way should a tempting offer be made. However, they are thought to value him slightly higher than £9m, so Liverpool may need to be willing to spend a little extra if they hope to bring him on board at Anfield.
