The Blues have been tracking the Red Devils’ highly rated England international for some time now, with Mourinho even failing with a number of big-money bids for Rooney during the previous transfer window as the Premier League champions steadfastly refused to allow the player to leave Old Trafford under any circumstances.

However, the self-styled Special One is still expected to return with a further offer for Rooney at the end of this campaign, but if United continue to maintain their so far tough stance with regard their star man, then it is understood that Mourinho will instead turn his attentions to Monaco’s deadly Colombia international instead.

And in order to be able to fund such a move – it is expected that the mega-rich Ligue 1 outfit would demand a fee of at least £60m for the marksman – it is believed that the Portuguese is preparing to offload the likes of Michael Essien, Juan Mata and Kevin de Bruyne.
