This source states that the 25 year old Serbian has agreed terms with his former club and that a €35m (£29m) fee will be paid by the West London side and that Matic will be presented as a Blues player tomorrow (Monday).
The 25 year old has been dropped by Benfica for the club’s key clash with FC Porto today, further increasing speculation that he will leave the Estádio da Luz this month.
The West London side have long been linked with an interest in the box to box performer who could offer Jose Mourinho a fresh dimension to Chelsea’s midfield perhaps being seen as a more rounded option to the likes of John Obi Mikel and Michael Essien.
Matic left Chelsea for Benfica in 2011 as part of the deal that saw David Luiz move to the Premier League side and successfully re-ignited his career after a stuttering spell at Stamford Bridge to become a pivotal part of the Lisbon side’s push for a Primeira Liga title.
Last term Matic finished as runner-up in the domestic league and cup competitions as well as seeing Benfica lose to Chelsea in the Europa League and as such he may feel it’s time to move on and a return to Chelsea clearly tempts the rangy midfielder.
Matic has made 94 appearances for Benfica, scoring nine goals.
