The Merseyside giants had been hoping to be able to tie up a six-month loan move for M’Vila now that the January transfer window has opened again for business for the season, with a view to then signing the 23-year-old on a permanent contract come the end of the campaign.

However, that was before former Reds boss Rafa Benitez also entered the running for M’Vila, with the Southern Italians now prepared to sign the ex-France international on a permanent deal this month, an offer that is more attractive to his Russian employers that Liverpool’s proposal.

All of which means that it now seems highly likely that M’Vila will instead make the switch to Naples rather than Merseyside in January, meaning that Rodgers will in turn have to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements to bring to Anfield for the second half of the campaign.

M’Vila has so far featured in 17 league matches for Rubin this season, creating three goals in the process.
