Norwich City are closing in on a deal to sign Newcastle United winger Jonas Gutierrez, according to Sky Sports.

The Argentine international was brought to St James’ Park by current Canaries boss Chris Hughton, who was with the Magpies at the time and he is now looking to be reunited with the player at Carrow Road as he looks to boost his side’s survival hopes.

Gutierrez has made 195 appearances for Newcastle since joining from Real Mallorca in the summer of 2008 and was a key player in helping the side gain promotion back to the Premier League when they suffered relegation in 2009.

Hughton confirmed at a press conference ahead of Norwich’s FA Cup tie with Fulham that he is looking to bring the 30-year-old to Carrow Road as soon as possible.

“There is an interest in Jonas Gutierrez but there’s nothing to confirm at this moment. If that changes, we will let you know,” Hughton said on the club’s official Twitter account.

Gutierrez has only featured twice this season but has apparently already said his goodbyes to the fans by saying: “It was an honour and a pleasure to play with the Newcastle shirt and to have the support of the Geordie.”
