The highly rated Serbia international was hoping to be able to complete his long-awaited move back to Stamford Bridge on Monday, with it initially thought that Matic would be presented as a Chelsea player later that day after negotiations between the two clubs in the Portuguese capital over the weekend.

Chelsea head coach Jose Mourinho is understood to be desperate to bring the 25-year-old to the capital as the self-styled Special One looks to find a suitable defensive midfielder.

However, despite both the Blues and the player himself believing that a deal for 25m euros had been agreed between the two parties, it now appears as though that is not the case, with Benfica understood to be now be seeking a fee of 30m euros for the Serb.

The 5m euros difference, though, could be made up by the west London club offering to loan their rivals two squad players, and it is the identity of those individuals which is now believed to be holding up the transfer.
