Southampton are hoping to be able to sign highly rated Wolfsburg midfielder Diego in the January transfer window, however, the south coast club face stiff competition for the Brazilian’s signature from Santos, according to reports on Sky Sports.

The former Brazil international’s current contract with the Bundesliga outfit now only runs until June 30 2014 and so Diego will be available on a free transfer come the end of this campaign.
However, both the Saints and Diego’s former club Santos are said to now be battling it out in order to sign the 28-year-old before the January transfer window slams shut once again for business for the season at the end of the month.
