The 21-year-old has only featured once for the Citizens in the Capital One Cup and has suffered his fair share of injuries and illness that has kept his involvement limited to a minimum.

Hughes watched his side go down 5-3 to Liverpool at the weekend, which is the most goals the club have scored in a Premier League clash since 2004.

And Hughes has intimated that he would like to bring the Swedish star to the club after remembering his abilities from his time in charge at the Etihad Stadium.

“If we can get him in, he’s a player that can add to what we have got and we are trying to add different options to our attack,” he told the Stoke Sentinel.

“He’s a natural goalscorer and if we can get him into the right areas, he will take chances.

“He was there (City) as a young player and worked with our under-21 coach Glynn Hodges when he was also there, so we know him.”
