Premier League champions Manchester United have made contact with struggling Sunderland with an offer to sign goalkeeper Vito Mannone in the January transfer window, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The former Italy Under-21 international is currently the first choice shot stopper at the Stadium of Light, however, Red Devils head coach David Moyes is hoping that the lure of the bright lights of Old Trafford will be enough to be able to persuade Mannone to swap Wearside for the Theatre of Dreams this month.

And the Scot’s move to sign the Italian must now place huge question marks over the long-term future of current United back-up keeper Anders Lindegaard, although rumours have been circulating of late suggesting that the Dane was no longer happy simply warming the substitutes’ bench in the north west.

Meanwhile, Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has also himself been heavily linked of late with making a move of his own for Argentina international No 2 Mariano Andujar, meaning that the relegation threatened Premier League outfit may also be happy to allow Mannone to quit the north east before the January transfer window finally slams shut for business once and for all for the season at the end of the month.
