The experienced Ghana international has largely found himself being surplus to requirements so far this season at the west London club, despite Blues head coach Jose Mourinho recalling Essien from a loan spell last season at Real Madrid in the summer.

However, Essien has mainly been warming the substitutes’ bench at Stamford Bridge under the self-styled Special One so far in this campaign, with the 31-year-old having featured in just the nine matches in total in all competitions to date for the Blues, including only five in the Premier League, creating one assist in the process.

And now the holding midfielder appears to be heading to San Siro in the January transfer window, initially on a six-month loan deal with a view to Milan then signing Essien on a permanent contract come the end of the campaign, with the Ghanaian’s current deal with the Uefa Europa League holders only running until June 30 2015.
