The highly rated young England international has been closely monitored by the likes of Premier League champions Manchester United, Uefa Europa League holders Chelsea and mega-rich top-flight outfit Manchester City in recent weeks.

However, it is now understood that the north London club have also now joined the race for Shaw, with many expecting the 18-year-old to quit the south-coast club in the January transfer window, especially with there being so many question marks currently hanging over the head of Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino.

And it is believed that Gunners head coach Arsene Wenger is hoping to be able to steal a march on his Premier League rivals by persuading the Englishman that the Emirates will be the best place for him to continue his football education.

Shaw only signed a contract extension with Southampton after turning 18 last July, with the player’s new deal at the club keeping the defender at St Mary’s until June 2018.
