The Premier League leaders have been heavily linked with the highly rated Germany international in recent weeks, with many media organisations even suggesting that Gunners head coach Arsene Wenger is preparing to launch a massive £42.5m bid to lure Draxler to the Emirates before the winter window slams shut for business for the season at the end of the month.

And if that scenario were to happen, then Germany international Mertersacker says that his compatriot would be a welcome addition to the Arsenal squad.

“We would love to welcome a player like Draxler, he is so young and already plays a huge role in Schalke and in the national team,” Mertesacker told German website Spox.

“But there is lots of talking about possible transfers, I am curious about what is going to happen.

“We already have a little German academy here and I learned that German discipline and talents are very appreciated here (in London).”

Draxler, 20, has a contract with Schalke that currently runs until June 30 2018.
