Cortese stepped down from his post on Wednesday after a series of disagreements with club owners, the Liebherr family and now there is speculation over the future of manager Mauricio Pochettino, who had stated over the summer that he would walk away should the Italian make his exit.
And now Chelsea will be looking to cause more chaos by making their long awaited move for England under-21 full-back Luke Shaw, who has been a target for Jose Mourinho since taking over the reigns again at the start of the season.
The Blues had been hoping to strike a deal with the south coast club by offering them the £6m rated Ryan Bertrand plus £15m in cash to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
However, both Arsenal and Manchester United will have been alerted too as they have been monitoring the situation with a view to making their own respective bids.
