The north-west outfit have been keeping close tabs on the in-demand France international for some time now as new City head coach Manuel Pellegrini looks to add more strength in depth to his at times leaky back four.

City have also been suffering from a number of injuries in the heart of their back line so far this season, especially to key skipper Vincent Kompany, and now with the club still on track to win an amazing four trophies this campaign, Pellegrini wants to sign a new central defender in the January transfer window.

And the player that the experienced Chilean boss is said to be targeting is Porto’s coveted young France international, although the Blues also know that they will face stiff competition for Mangala’s signature from the likes of mega-rich Ligue 1 duo AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain, who are both also said to be keen on landing the player this month.

However, any interested party will still need to pay the £42m release clause in Mangala’s contract with the Portuguese champions.
