The England star has been in Egypt for warm-weather training and is expected back at United’s Carrington training base on Thursday.

It is understood David Moyes will not risk Rooney for the trip to Stamford Bridge, while the forward rated as 50-50 for the Capital One Cup semi-final second leg against Sunderland three days later.

Rooney has played in only three of United’s last eight matches and with Van Persie also on the sidelines, Moyes is likely to opt for Danny Welbeck as a lone striker with wonderkid Adnan Januzaj in the ‘hole’.

In league 17 appearances for the Red Devils this term, Rooney has notched up nine goals and nine assists, while Van Persie has scored seven times in the league despite starting just 10 matches.
