The north London club have been closely monitoring the Spain Under-21 international of late with a view to possibly agreeing a six-month loan deal for the player in this month’s transfer window.

In fact, it was widely assumed that Gunners head coach Arsene Wenger had now all but finalised the negotiations to bring Morata to the Emirates, with Arsenal thought to be paying a one-off fee of £1.7m for the striker.

However, that was before both Italian outfits made it known that they were interested in signing the 21-year-old on a permanent basis for a fee of £11m in January after the forward recently admitted that he would consider departing the Santiago Bernabeu: “Real Madrid have been my team since I was little and will be all my life, but I think the important thing is to have a relevant role in the team.

“If I ever feel that’s not the case, I would look at other options. In football, it’s very difficult to stay at the top and even more so in a team like Real.”
