The Frenchman has been expected to join the Serie A outfit this month after making just 13 appearances for Spurs following a £9m summer move from Toulouse.

Capoue has slipped down the pecking order at White Hart Lane, with new head-coach Tim Sherwood preferring 19-year-old Nabil Bentaleb alongside Mousa Dembele in the London derbies against Arsenal and Crystal Palace.

The Mail gives no reason for Spurs’ change of heart but it now seems Capoue will stay and fight for his place at White Hart Lane.

Spurs boast a whole host of central midfielders, with Sandro and Paulinho currently injured and Christian Eriksen, Lewis Holtby and Gylfi Sigurdsson all able to operate through the middle.

Sherwood has so far favoured a 4-4-2 system, and has only found space for Capoue in midfield once so far – in the 2-1 win at Manchester United.
