Man United are reportedly readying a surprise bid for Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen according to well respected Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri.

Such a move would come as something of a shock to the Old Trafford faithful given that the Belgian international is something of a bit-part player at the Emirates Stadium though is of course still the club’s captain.

The 28 year old former Ajax man is capable of effectively filling both central defensive and left-back roles but has made just three Premier League starts this season with Arsene Wenger opting to use Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny as his first choice centre-back pairing and Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal to fill left sided defensive duties.

Vermaelen has previously been a regular at Arsenal but has fallen out of favour and could perhaps be considering his future, with a lack of first team football threatening his standing in the Belgian national team set-up.

A high profile move to Man United would only aid this push and Moyes may well see Vermaelen as a sensible defensive option to target with the likes of Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic all being out of contract in the summer.

Arsenal signed Vermaelen in June 2009 and has made 140 appearances for the Gunners.
