The Reds are understood to be desperate to strengthen their first-team squad this month as head coach Brendan Rodgers prepares for a renewed push to finish the campaign in the top four of the Premier League come May time, and with it gain entry into next season’s Uefa Champions League in the process.

And two of the most important areas of the team that the Northern Irishman is believed to be keen to add to in this month are at left back and in the attacking midfield areas.

Currently, Liverpool are badly short of numbers at left back following injuries to both Jose Enrique and back-up John Flanagan.

And after missing out on first-choice target Ryan Bertrand after Chelsea’s England international opted to move to Aston Villa instead on a six-month loan deal last week instead of joining Rodgers at Anfield, the club have since moved their focus on to their next target, Tottenham’s one-time England Under-21 international.

Rodgers is now hoping to be able to agree an initial short-term deal for Rose until the end of the season, before then landing the player on a permanent contract next summer.

Meanwhile, the Liverpool manager is now also said to be targeting a swoop for Spurs’ Germany international midfielder too, a player that new Tottenham coach Tim Sherwood is by all accounts happy to offload in the January window after a disappointing first half to the season by Holtby.

The German has only been at White Hart Lane for just over a year now, during which time the 23-year-old has managed to net three goals in total in his 36 appearances for the north London club.

And with a contract in the capital that runs until June 2018, Spurs are believed to be seeking a fee in the region of £1om for Holtby.
