The Merseysiders have been heavily linked with a whole host of players ever since the winter transfer window opened again for business for the season at the beginning of this month.

And one area of the pitch that the Reds are believed to be keen to strengthen is in the centre of the park, although the name if the former Portsmouth holding midfielder will come as a huge surprise to many of the club’s fans.

The 28-year-old spent three years with the south coast club between 2007 and 2010, during which time Mvuemba managed to find the back of the net on just the one occasion in his 21 Premier League outings for Pompey.

And after leaving the then Premier League outfit, the former Democratic of Congo international then joined Ligue 1 side Lorient in August 2009, before the player moved to Lyon for an initial 3m euros in the summer of 2012.

“Liverpool’s chairman has shown his interest. He enquired if there is the chance of signing him,” said Mvuemba’s agent Fleury di Nalio.
