Sky Sports claim that the French manager was running the rule over midfielder Sergi Roberto, who has often been compared to former Gunners skipper Cesc Fabregas.

This has led to speculation that Wenger may be ready to make an offer for Roberto, who is something of a bit-part player at the Nou Camp side, making just one La Liga fixture this season.

Though Arsenal have a host of central and creative midfield options there is perhaps scope for a youthful addition when you factor in that Tomas Rosicky is out of contract in the summer and Mikel Arteta at 31 is perhaps not a long term option.

Roberto is an intelligent midfielder who may feel his chances at making the grade at Barcelona are severely hampered and a move to Arsenal could tempt the youngster.

The locally born playmaker will turn 22 in a matter of weeks and has started just three domestic league games since making his debut back in November 2010 and could feel his chances of securing a first call-up to the senior Spanish national team set-up would be helped by a high profile move to the Emirates Stadium.
