Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has claimed that Juan Mata’s proposed move from London rivals Chelsea to Manchester United “lacks fairness”, according to Sky Sports.

Reports over the last 24 hours have suggested that the Spanish international playmaker will move to Old Trafford in the coming days after Chelsea accepted an offer of around £40m for his services.

However, Wenger is not entirely happy with the set up, believing it unfair for Chelsea to consider United’s offer, especially as the two sides have already met each other twice this season.

“I am surprised. Juan Mata is a great player and they sell a great player to a direct opponent,” Wenger said.

“Chelsea have already played twice against Man United, they could have sold him last week.

“I think if you want to respect the fairness for everybody, this should not happen.

“I can understand completely what Chelsea are doing, and they do not make the rules, but maybe the rules should be a bit more adapted for fairness.”

Arsenal are currently sat at the top of the Premier League table, and are just two points ahead of Chelsea, who lie in third. But Wenger is concerned that his side will come up against Mata on February 12 when the defending champions travel to the Emirates.
