The brilliant Spain international is now on the verge of leaving Stamford Bridge for Old Trafford in a deal worth between £37m and £40m, and the 25-year-old’s departure will now create space in the Blues’ squad for one more attack-minded player going forward.

And it is understood that the man that Chelsea head coach Jose Mourinho has identified to fill Mata’s shoes is the Merseyside giants’ highly rated young England international, with Barkley currently enjoying a fine campaign at Goodison Park under new Toffees manager Roberto Martinez’s guidance.

Barkley, who is currently out injured with a broken toe, has so far managed to find the back of the net on three occasions in his 19 Premier League outings and despite the 20-year-old being contracted to Everton until June 2016, the club do have a recent history of selling their best young players, including the likes of Wayne Rooney and Jack Rodwell.
