The mega-rich Premier League outfit want to bring a new defender to Eastlands in the January transfer window with the future of England international Joleon Lescott in the north west still very much open to debate.

The likes of West Ham United, Aston Villa, Fulham, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur have all been linked with a move for Lescott of late, with the centre back having barely been used by City head coach Manuel Pellegrini so far in this campaign.

And if the player does leave the club, then Pellegrini will be forced to bring in a replacement for the Englishman, with the Chilean initially hoping that that player would be Porto’s France international.

However, with the Portuguese champions insisting on valuing the 22-year-old at a whopping £40m, City have decided to look elsewhere for alternative defenders, with Munich’s Brazil international Dante now said to be their favoured choice, although the club know they will also face stiff competition from city rivals Manchester United for the player’s signature.
