Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 are confident of being able to re-sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lewis Holtby before the January transfer window slams shut for business for the season once again at the end of the month, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The Germany international has only been with the north London club for a year now after the player originally arrived at White Hart Lane in last year’s winter transfer window.

However, Holtby has struggled badly to win a regular starting berth in the Spurs midfield, especially this season following the club’s lavish spending on a raft of big-name players during the summer following the world-record 100m euros sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.

And now as a result it appears as though the 23-year-old is on the verge of a sudden return to his former employers, a prospect  that excites both Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and captain Benedikt Hoewedes.

“Holtby would help us,” Huntelaar told Bild. “He can play nearly every position in midfield. Lewis has quality, and Schalke can always use that.”

Meanwhile, Hoewedes added: “He is a good player. If it fits for both sides, he would certainly help us.”
