Sherwood has been promised extra funds to make the necessary additions to his squad during the January transfer window and he has been keeping an eye on the 19-year-old over the past month.

And now Spurs scouts have identified him as a viable possibility and the club have already made an approach to Juventus regarding his future and they will now look to form a deal for his services.

Berrardi is currently on loan with Serie A new boys Sassuolo, where he has been in scintillating form this season and was even on hand to notch up four goals against AC Milan recently.

Manchester City, Manchester United and Barcelona have all been credited with an interest in his signature, but it is Spurs who are said to be the ones closest to arranging something with the defending Italian champions.

Spurs would have to fork out around £15m for the Italian, though reports have suggested that Etienne Capoue would be included in the deal.
