The Premier League giants and the England international have now begun preliminary talks over a new contract that will see Rooney end his illustrious playing career at the Theare of Dreams.

And it is understood that United are now willing to pull out all the stops in order to keep the 28-year-old in the north west beyond the end of his current deal, which now expires on June 30 2015.

All of which means that on top of making Rooney the highest-paid player in the club’s history by offering the striker a new bumper four-and-a-half-year contract worth a staggering £300,000 per week, United are now prepared to also make the player club captain next season with both current skippers Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra set to quit the north west this summer.

And not only that, but Rooney will also be kept abreast of all of manager David Moyes’s plans for both this transfer window and the summer’s in a final attempt to convince the star to remain at United.
