The 30-year-old is currently spending the season on loan with fellow Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt, where he has bagged four goals in 21 appearances, and he has been tracked by Italian giants Lazio.
However, Black Cats boss Gus Poyet could be set to beat the Serie A side to the punch as he looks to make additions to his own attacking options.
Lakic joined Wolfsburg back in 2011, but failed to properly establish himself as a regular started at the club under both Felix Magath and Dieter Hecking, and was shipped out on loan to Frankfurt at the beginning of the current campaign after spending a first loan spell with Hoffenheim last season.
He has previously featured for the Croatian under-21 side, but failed to make it up to earn full honours despite a good goalscoring record in Germany with Kaiserslautern, though he was with them when there were on the second rung of the German footballing ladder.
