The highly rated young England Under-21 international has been at the centre of a transfer tug of war between the two Premier League giants of late, with the Red Devils being the first club to make their move after lodging a bid valued at a whopping £22m for the defender last week.

However, that offer was immediately rejected out of hand by the south coast club, who value their star man at nearer the £30m mark and are refusing to allow Shaw to leave St Mary’s for anything less than that sum.

United, though, still plan on returning to the Saints with a second improved offer for the 18-year-old before the January transfer window closes for business at midnight on Friday as manager David Moyes attempts to find a long-term replacement for current left-back Patrice Evra at Old Trafford.

But the Scot is set to be disappointed, with Shaw believed to be holding out for a dream summer move to Stamford Bridge instead.
