The highly rated Argentina international had appeared to be on the verge of moving to the Mestalla in the January transfer window on a six-month loan deal, with a view to them joining los Che on a permanent contract come the end of the season.

However, with that transfer having now collapsed over the Portuguese champions’ financial demands, Otamendi has now been left in limbo with regard in own future, with the player himself said to still be keen to quit the Dragao before the winter window closes for business on Friday night in order to preserve his place in his country’s squad for this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

And that may now open the door for a possible switch to the English Premier League, especially considering the fact that the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City have all in the past been linked with the 25-year-old.
