The 23-year-old joined Spurs for a bargain £1.5m last January from Bundesliga giants Schalke, but had failed to establish himself in the squad under both Andre Villas-Boas and Tim Sherwood, and has subsequently sough a quick exit from the club in order to keep himself in the thinking for the German World Cup camp.

Holtby will now link up with another former colleague in Clint Dempsey, who is also at the club on a loan deal from the Seattle Sounders. The pair played together for a brief period at White Heart Lane before Dempsey made the return to the United States with Holtby largely thought to be his replacement.

The German international scored his first Premier League goal against the Whites on his Spurs debut 12 months ago, but he will now wear the number 10 shirt for the club in a bid to help them claw free of the relegation zone.

Holtby made a total of 36 appearances for Spurs, scoring three goals.
