The Merseyside giants have been trying all day to land a defender, with the Reds currently badly short of numbers at the back at Anfield following a spate of recent injuries to a number of key defenders.

In fact, for the club’s most recent Premier League fixture against city rivals Everton at Anfield on Tuesday night, Liverpool head coach Brendan Rodgers was unable to call upon the services of Jose Enrique, Daniel Agger, Glen Johnson and Mamadou Sakho.

And that is believed to be the reason that the Northern Irishman firstly tried to persuade title rivals Manchester City to part company with their out-of-favour England international right-back Micah Richards on loan until the end of the campaign.

And then after being seeing his approach to the north-west giants being immediately rejected out of hand, Rodgers then decided to switch his focus to the Swans’ former Spain Under-21 international instead, only to again be rebuffed in his efforts.
