The Reds have seen regular right-back Glen Johnson struggle with continuos injury problems this term and Rodgers has been keen to seek out somebody to take over while he returns.

And the manager decided to strike while the iron was hot today by making a loan move for the England international.

However, City boss Manuel Pellegrini has rejected the approach, claiming that the squad need him as back up to Pablo Zabaleta. Richards can also provide cover in the centre of defence too, proving that his versatility is vital to City’s title challenge.

Richards has been left out of the City starting XI this term thanks to the excellent form of the Argentine international and several injuries too, but he has intimated that he would be open to leaving the club in order to get a run of games in a first team.

But unless Pellegrini has a sudden change of heart, Richards looks set to endure a frustrating few months stuck on the sidelines yet again.
