Man United have made an offer of £12.3m for FC Porto defender Nicolas Otamendi according to Goal.com.

Old Trafford boss David Moyes is keen to strengthen his defence for the current campaign and will also have to plan ahead to the probable departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, both of whom are out of contract in the summer.

With that in mind a move for rock solid Argentine international Otamendi would be a sensible option to consider, with FC Porto apparently more likely to consider offers for the 25 year old than prized defensive talent Eliaquim Mangala, who has been the subject of growing interest over the past year.

Either way one imagines that a £12.3m bid for Otamendi won’t be anywhere near enough to persuade the Primeira Liga side to sell, not in today’s inflated transfer market.

Moyes had stated previously that as part of his recruitment drive following the signing of Juan Mata from Chelsea that he would look to bring in five more players who were at the peak of their powers and Otamendi may well fall into that category but in order to sign the former Velez Sarsfield man he would have to pay the going rate for a player of his talents.
