The mega-rich Premier League club had made a late effort to lure the duo to Eastlands before the January transfer window closes on Friday night, with the Blues even sending a delegation to Oporto on Friday to finalise the deal.

However, it is understood that the north-west giants have been unable to come to any sort of agreement with the Portuguese champions over a suitable price for the pair, with City only prepared to pay as much as £35m for the centre back and the holding midfielder.

And with Porto said to be holding out for a higher fee, City have now decided to call off talks and instead return for the two players at the end of the season, when by that stage the club may be able to agree a better deal for them.

For one thing, Brazil international Fernando’s contract at the Dragao will by that point have run out, meaning the defensive midfielder will be available on a free transfer.
