Stoke boss Mark Hughes was knocked back in his advances for the player earlier this week, but has since upped his offer in an attempt to  twist Gus Poyet’s arm into letting him go.

And now the Black Cats boss appears to be willing to listen to his red-and-white stripped counterpart after completing the signing of Liam Bridcutt from Brighton on Friday morning.

Hughes is keen on bringing in a defensive midfielder before the transfer window closes at 11pm, and a fee in the region of £5m is said to be enough to bring the player on board.

The 25-year-old joined the Stadium of Light outfit from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2009 for £6m and has gone on to make over 100 appearances for the club, but has failed to find the back of the net.

However, should the move go through, Cattermole will be denied of an appearance at a cup final with Sunderland set to take on Manchester City in the Capital One Cup final next month.
