The former Manchester United assistant coach has struggled to turn around the west London club’s fortunes since he took over from compatriot Martin Jol in the Cottagers hot seat before Christmas.

In fact, so far under the new manager Fulham have slumped to eight defeats in 10 Premier League contests, including Saturday’s 3-0 home reverse against Southampton that now sees the west Londoners propping up the top flight.

And it is understood that unless their is significant improvement in the club’s form in their next three Premier League fixtures, two of which are against Liverpool and Manchester United, then Meulensteen will be given his marching orders to be replaced by technical director Curbishley.

“Without doubt, this is the biggest challenge I have ever faced in football. And it is the biggest challenge this club has faced,” he said after the Saints loss.

“What we cannot afford to do is lay down and feel sorry for ourselves. We cannot do anything about what has gone. We can only get as many points as we can from the 14 matches we have left.”
