Reports back in the player’s home country have suggested that his representatives met with club officials in a bid to secure him a new club, but Santos told them that they were not interested in signing him, even on loan.

The offer came before Friday’s transfer deadline day, but was rebuffed almost immediately and the former Inter man saw another prospective move fall through.

QPR had allowed the 34-year-old to find a new club over the new year as he had found first team football in west London difficult to come by this season.

A tentative link to Arsenal failed to materialise and possible moves to Serie A pair Sampdoria and Cagliari yielded no results, as Samp rejected the chance to sign him as Santos had.

Santos decided to keep the faith with their current number one Aranha, who has performed admirably over his 27 appearances so far this season.

Julio Cesar had been keen to move away from the Championship promotion hopefuls as he still had one eye on making into the Brazilian national team for this summer’s World Cup.
