Stamford Bridge boss Jose Mourinho is keen to bring in a prolific marksman to lead the Chelsea attack, with his current cope of forwards all failing to make a consistent impact.
Though Samuel Eto’o did net a hat-trick against Man United he has on the whole proved ineffective up front and Fernando Torres and Demba Ba have been profligate in front of goal, leading Chelsea’s creative midfielders having to shoulder the goal-scoring burden.
Mourinho is said to have earmarked a move for FC Porto’s Jackson Martinez and Atletico Madrid goal machine Diego Costa but is also keeping tabs on his former Inter Milan charge Balotelli.
The Portuguese manager has failed with bids for Man United striker Wayne Rooney and may find it easier to prize Balotelli away from the San Siro.
Despite many problems Balotelli has encountered since returning to Italy the young striker has still scored regularly, netting 21 goals in 29 Serie A appearances for the Rossoneri.
