The 24-year-old is currently without a club after being released by Brazilian side Bahia in November and is therefore available on a free transfer.

He travelled with the team to watch them in action against Blackburn Rovers at the weekend and will continue to train with the first team squad for the foreseeable future.

He is also expected to take part in a behind closed doors friendly against the club’s highly acclaimed youth team on Tuesday evening.

Caretaker boss Barry Ferguson will be on hand to keep an eye on his progress before making a final decision on whether to keep him on board.

Adu was tipped to be the next big thing in world football after he managed to pen a contract with MLS side DC United at just 14 years of age, but so far he has been unable to fulfil that potential.

Ferguson is prepared to offer him the best possible chance at making an impression, though, insisting that the club needs something to turn their season around.

“Freddy is just over to train and I’m going to have a look at him. That’s as far as it goes at the moment,: he told the Blackpool Gazette.

“He’s not played in two months and he’s just come back from Brazil. We’ll see how he does in training.”
