The 25-year-old has been a long time target of La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, as well as defending Premier League champions Manchester United, but he has underlined how happy he is at Signal-Iduna-Park.

And bizarrely enough, the former Bayern Munich man has confessed that he is not inspired by the prospect of being in the hunt for trophies season in and season out.

“I do not necessarily need to play for the best team in the world to remain in a situation to have a certain chance to grab trophies. That’s a fact,” he told Die Welt.

“I am a player of Borussia Dortmund and, so to say, I would prefer one UEFA Champions League title with Borussia Dortmund over six with an other club.”

Hummels has only just returned from a knee ligament injury sustained at the end of last year, but has yet to step back on the field, but he could be available for this weekend’s clash with Werder Bremen.

Hummels is still under contract with Dortmund until 2017 and is currently valued at £23m.
