St James’ Park side target former Tottenham man.
Newcastle United are one of a number of clubs said to be monitoring experienced Dutch international Rafael van der Vaart according to Sports Direct News.
The 30 year old is also being tracked by Monaco, Galatasaray and AC Milan with his Hamburg side sitting in the Bundesliga relegation zone and strongly linked with a move away from Imtech Arena.
Alan Pardew apparently sees van der Vaart as a possible replacement for Yohan Cabaye, who left for PSG last month, and the goal-scoring midfielder may well be tempted by a move back to the Premier League, especially if Bert van Marwijk’s side suffer relegation to the German second tier.
Despite Hamburg’s predicament van der Vaart has impressed, scoring seven goals and providing five assists in 16 Bundesliga starts and last term the cultured playmaker and last term finished the season as one of the leading assist maker in the division.
Rafael van der Vaart proved very effective during his two seasons at White Hart Lane, scoring 28 goals in 78 appearances for the North London side.
Pardew will hope that in the summer he will be able to use some of the £20m brought in from the sale of Cabaye.
