Russian giants ready to make mammoth offer for Emirates Stadium bit-part player.
Russian Premier League side Zenit St Petersburg are ready to offer as much as £18m for Arsenal bit-part player Thomas Vermaelen according to the Metro.
Such an offer may be hard for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger to turn down, even if such an offer would leave the North London club a little short at the back.
The 28 year old Belgian is currently Arsenal’s club captain though has started just three Premier League fixtures this season and is desperate to secure regular first team football with the 2014 World Cup finals on the horizon and a move to Russia may prove to be the lucrative new challenge that tempts the adaptable defender.
Wenger sees Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny as his first choice centre-back pair and in Vermaelen’s other position, at right-back, the Emirates Stadium side can call upon Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal and as such the opportunities for the former Ajax man are very limited at present and clearly the experienced campaigner is at the point in his career where warming the bench is stifling his progress.
