With Old Trafford boss David Moyes likely to see both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand end their respective Man United careers when their contracts come to a close in the summer, the Scot has clearly set about looking for able replacements to help form the nucleus of his long term defensive plans.
26 year old England man Shawcross left Man United back in August 2007, initially moving to the Britannia Stadium on a loan deal, and has proven a rock solid performer for Stoke City and could well be tempted by a move back to his former club.
The no-nonsense Stoke City captain has racked up 271 appearances for the Potters and is arguably a more consistent performer than the likes of Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling though one imagines boss Mark Hughes will demand a big fee for the most important member of his squad.
Stoke City paid Man United £1m for Shawcross but would certainly demand above ten times that fee in the summer.
