The Croatian international was the subject of a £35m bid whilst with Tottenham Hotspur, but the White Heart Lane outfit did not want to sell him to their London rivals and let him move on to Spain instead in the summer of 2012.
After a slow start to life in the Spanish capital he quickly became a regular first team fixture under Jose Mourinho, and now the Blues boss is keen to team up with the player once again.
He has been tipped to be the long term replacement for veteran legend Frank Lampard, even though the 35-year-old could be offered fresh terms to stay at Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.
But Lampard would still only be expected to play a bit part role at the club, and that, coupled with Michael Essien’s recent departure to AC Milan could leave room for Modric to make a spot in the middle his own.
However, he has already featured 31 times for Los Blancos this term, and they make any prospective move difficult for the Blues.
