Suarez was the subject of two separate bids from the Gunners during the summer transfer window after Arsene Wenger made him his top priority.

The Uruguayan international eventually stayed put at Anfield, and ever penned a new deal to stay at the club a few months later, but Mertesacker has insisted that the players all wanted him on board.

“Suarez is like a cheeky boy,” said the German international.

“He looks like a cheeky boy who can really switch on and off how he wants to be, so that is really something. When he is on the pitch, what is going on around him doesn’t bother him.

“He is a pure striker that is what comes out after the transfer requests.”

Mertesacker will come up against Suarez on Saturday afternoon when the two sides meet, and his comments come just a week after Wenger ruled out making any future bids for the controversial star.

But Suarez has showed exactly why the North London outfit were so keen on his services with 23 goals in 22 appearances this season.
